Washington, DC - May 2009

As always our trips to Washington are wonderful. It is
quite a treat to visit our nation's capital and the
surrounding area. There is so much history
allowing us to learn more about our great nation.
Regardless of who is living in the White House,
it is still inspiring to stand in front of the
most famous house in the world.

This was our first visit to the World War II Memorial.
On the day we visited the weather was perfect and
the grounds were filled with school children
on field trips, hopefully learning more about
our country and those who gave the ultimate price
for our freedom. For me it was especially moving,
my father served in the US Army
during World War II in the Pacific theatre.

The Washington Monument can be seen from so many
places around the city but it is spectacular at night when it is all lit up.

This is a musket firing demonstration at Manassas where both
Bull Run battles took place. Manassas is just a short ride
from Greg and Karen's home.

This is an ammunition depot at Harper's Ferry. One of
only two from the Civil War. Harper's Ferry is a
very interesting town. Just beyond this building is
the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers.
Harper's Ferry is in West Virginia but
across the river to left is Maryland.
And across the river to the right is Virginia.

This is Burnside Bridge at Antietam, named after General Burnside.
It was his facial hair that gave us the term "sideburns."

This is the recently dedeicated memorial at the Pentagon.

The lines in the gravel and the walkways reflect the path of the
plane that hit the Pentagon. The three spires in the background
is the Air Force Memorial.
